I graduated from Winthrop University where I was a starting pitcher for the top 25 Eagles. After graduation I worked in the Netherlands and Germany for a plastics manufacturing company, where my focus was on lean manufacturing processes. After leaving the Netherlands I attended Charleston School of Law. While in school I served as President of the Federalist Society and was active with the Trial Advocacy Team. I also completed over one thousand hours of pro bono legal work at the Charleston County Public Defender’s office.
Immediately after I graduated and passed the South Carolina Bar I Joined my good friend and colleague Bill Thrower, Esq., to form the law firm Thrower & Schwartz Law Firm. After Bill’s untimely passing, I started Schwartz Law Firm, L.L.C.
I have extensive experience as a trial attorney and have tried over two dozen jury trials, including murders, rapes, robberies and drug trafficking as well as numerous family law and civil trials. I understand that having a legal issue, be it criminal, family or civil, can be the most stressful time of your life and I strive to give each client a personalized touch while I guide you through the legal process. As an aggressive litigator and negotiator, I am unwavering in my commitment to providing my clients with "personal attention, informed legal advice and excellent case outcomes."
Kayla Owens graduated from the College of Charleston, where she earned her degree in Political Science and International Studies with a minor in Spanish. While in college, she studied abroad in Spain, learning about the languages, cultures, and diversity. As a result, speaking conversational Spanish comes more easily to her. Throughout high school, college, and later law school, Kayla worked at The Kickin’ Chicken in Charleston as a food runner, server, and bartender. This is where she learned so much about the value of hard work and dedication throughout 12 years at this local establishment.
After college, Kayla attended the Charleston School of Law. While in school, she served as a Senator on the Student Bar Association with the Community Service Committee. She was highly successful and active with the school’s Trial Advocacy Team and graduated from CSOL magna cum laude.
Immediately after graduation, and shortly before passing the South Carolina Bar, Kayla accepted an administrative assistant position with the Honorable Jack A. Landis in the Family Court’s Ninth Judicial Circuit. For fourteen months, she sat directly with Judge Landis assisting in legal research, drafting orders, and being a liaison between attorneys, litigants, and the Court.
When she’s not working on your case, she enjoys playing kickball with a local league, spending time on the water, running, and spending quality time with family here in Charleston, where she grew up.
At the Schwartz Law Firm, Kayla has experience with family law, criminal law, including DUI charges, and civil law. She has had the privilege of working alongside many of the South Carolina Family Court judges before beginning her career at the Schwartz Law Firm, allowing her to better understand the court’s application of the law. She understands that being involved in litigation is stressful, and will take the time to listen to you and understand your case. She will strive in every case for a successful outcome for you and your family.
